Request to Implement Parking -
Sorauren Avenue, west side, from Queen Street West
to Saunders Avenue (High Park)
The Toronto Community Council recommends the adoption of the following
report (December 15, 1999) from the Director, Transportation Services, District
1:
Purpose:
To report on a proposal intended to increase the number of parking
spaces on Sorauren Avenue and enhance parking opportunity for
area residents.
Financial Implications and Impact Statement:
Funds to undertake the necessary signage adjustments in the estimated
amount of $600.00 are contained in the Transportation Services Division
2000 Current Estimates.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that:
(1) the "No Parking Anytime" regulation on the west side of Sorauren Avenue,
from Queen Street West to Saunders Avenue, be rescinded;
(2) parking be prohibited at anytime on the west side of Sorauren Avenue, from
Queen Street West to a point 30.5 metres further north; and
(3) the appropriate City Officials be authorized and directed to take
whatever action is necessary to implement the foregoing,
including the introduction in Council of any Bills that are required.
Comments:
At the request of the High Park Ward Councillors Chris
Korwin-Kuczynski and David Miller and residents of Sorauren Avenue,
Transportation Services' staff investigated the feasibility of allowing
parking on the west side of Sorauren Avenue, from Queen Street West
to Saunders Avenue, in order to increase on-street parking opportunity
for area residents.
Historically, this section of roadway was used as a turning point for
transit vehicles and by vehicles entering and egressing a Fire Hall
situated just north of Queen Street West. As a result, parking was not
permitted in order to maintain clear, unobstructed passage for these
vehicles. There is no reason to further prohibit parking on this section
of roadway given that both these functions are no longer operational.
Parking demand by residents in the area has increased significantly in
recent years. By allowing parking on this section of Sorauren Avenue,
17 additional parking spaces would be created to benefit area residents.
Since permit parking is currently not licensed on this section of
Sorauren Avenue at this time, there will be no impact on the status of
permit parking in the neighbourhood nor will this proposal adversely
affect operational safety on Sorauren Avenue.
