OF THE EAST YORK COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Item Considered by the East York Community Council

(City Council on October 1 and 2, 1998, deferred consideration of this Clause to the next regular meeting of City Council to be held on October 28, 1998.)

(a)The 2008 Toronto Olympic Bid.

The East York Community Council reports having:

(1)requested the Commissioner of Economic Development, Culture and Tourism, to submit a consolidated report to the Strategic Policies and Priorities Committee scheduled for November 17, 1998, which shall incorporate recommendations from all Community Councils, including the following:

(a)that City Council be requested to consider the holding of a referendum on the issue of the bid for the 2008 Olympics during the November 2000 Municipal Election;

(b)that City Council be requested to develop its own focus group which would be inclusive in nature and would be held in January, 1999;

(c)that City Council be requested to hold more than two open houses which are geographically located to allow the greatest number of people to attend rather than host them only at the Metro Reference Library and that these open houses be held for more than two days;

(d)that City Council be requested to consider, as a priority, a master plan to develop a vehicular and public transportation system which can accommodate the Olympics;

(e)that a questionnaire be prepared which shall gather public input and identify issues and areas of concern in their order of importance with respect to the Olympic bid;

(2)requested the City Clerk to submit the notes taken at this meeting of the East York Community Council to the focus groups for their consideration;

(3)received the presentation by Mr. David Crombie regarding Toronto's bid for the 2008Olympics; and

(4)received the report (September 1, 1998) from the Commissioner of Economic Development, Culture and Tourism:

(September 1, 1998) from the Commissioner of Economic Development, Culture and Tourism, inviting consultation on the public's ideas and suggestions about what to include in the "OlympicPrinciples" which will guide Toronto's Olympic Bid as well as providing comments on the key issues such as transportation, financial impact, environment, culture, venues and social equity.
