Members of the Board of Management of the Toronto Zoo and Staff:  Please keep this agenda and the accompanying material until the Board meeting dealing with these matters has ended.  The City Clerk’s Office will not provide additional copies.

 

Closed Meeting Requirements:  If the Board of Management of the Toronto Zoo wants to meet in closed session (privately), a member of the Board must make a motion to do so and give the reason why the Board has to meet privately.(City of Toronto Act, 2006)

2010 Advertising Expenditure Approval

Recommendations

It is recommended that:

 

1.         Staff proceed with the production of creative as required; and

 

2.         Zenith Optimedia purchase media for the 2010 advertising campaign.

Summary

This report seeks Board approval to proceed with expenditures related to the 2010 paid advertising campaign. The 2010 creative production and media budget is unchanged from 2009.  The Zoo achieved the third highest attendance level in the Zoo’s history in 2009.

Financial Impact

The total production and media budget of $1,246,000 is contained in the approved 2010 Operating Budget.

Veterinary Fellowship Program

Recommendations

It is recommended that the Toronto Zoo enter into a contract with the University of Guelph for the continuation of the Veterinary Fellowship program for a three-year period from September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2013.

Summary

Approval is requested to continue the Veterinary Fellowship program with the University of Guelph for a further three-year period.

Financial Impact

The Toronto Zoo has funded the Veterinary Fellowship program since its inception in 1979, and has been very supportive of the program. The cost for the stipend for the new Veterinary Resident totals $116,090 over three years. An additional $28,300 is budgeted for research expenses and travel over that same period.

Rouge Park Governance Review

Recommendations

It is recommended that the Board of Management:

 

1.          endorse the concept of a Rouge National Park on the lands shown as areas 1, 2 and 3 on Schedule A, attached to the report dated April 23, 2010, from the Chief Executive Officer;

 

2.         support the development of a “Founding Deal” including, but not limited to, the elements of such a deal as outlined in Schedule B, attached to the report dated April 23, 2010, from the Chief Executive Officer; and

 

3.          formally advise the Rouge Park Alliance of its position on the above recommendations.

Summary

On 2010-02-05, the Rouge Park Alliance unanimously approved the receipt of a consultants’ report recommending the creation of a Rouge National Park, the preparation of a “Founding Deal” and other related matters.  The Alliance also requested that the report be circulated to its member organizations for comment.  Zoo staff have reviewed the Rouge Park Governance Review report and are in general agreement with the conclusions and recommendations.  It is recommended that the Board of Management formally endorse the National Park concept, advise the Rouge Park Alliance of its position, and work with the Alliance to achieve this goal.

African Rainforest Pavilion South Exhibits Refurbishment

Recommendations

It is recommended that $309,000 be transferred from the Siberian Tiger Exhibit and Holding Refurbishment Project to the African Rainforest Pavilion South Exhibit Refurbishment project.

Summary

This report recommends the reallocation of funding for use at the south half of the African Rainforest Pavilion.

Financial Impact

There are no financial implications to this report, as the required funds are within the approved 2010-2014 Capital Works Program.
