Summary

The purpose of this report is to review and update the Board of Management on the activities of

the Volunteer Services Unit for the year 2009. Zoo Volunteers interact with the public,

interpreting exhibits and furthering our education and conservation mandate. The Zoo’s 340

Volunteers donated 27,846 hours and contacted over 794,600 people. The program benefits

from a stable and long-term group of volunteers who are deeply committed to the work of the

Zoo and, importantly, who thoroughly enjoy interacting with our visitors of all ages.

Committee Decision

 The Board:

 

1.         Approved the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Zoo  as recommended in the Confidential Attachment effective March 29, 2010.

 

2.         Authorized the Chair of the Selection Panel to execute an employment agreement with the recommended candidate in accordance with the policies in place for management staff at the Toronto Zoo, and to execute any related documents as necessary.

 

3.         Authorized the public release of the name and summary profile of the new Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Zoo, contained in the confidential attachment upon approval of the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer, but not before the candidate has provided his written acceptance of the offer of employment.

Summary

A selection process to fill the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Toronto Zoo was initiated in the fall of 2009.


The Selection Panel was chaired by Councillor Mammoliti, and members included Councillor Cho, Councillor De Baeremaeker and Councillor Grimes.   The Selection Panel was assisted by Odgers Berndtson, an independent Executive Search firm engaged to undertake the search and to support the selection process.  Odgers Berndtson conducted a North American-wide search to fill this position.  The Selection Panel undertook a systematic and consistent interview process, and unanimously recommends to the Board of Management of the Toronto Zoo the appointment of a CEO as identified in Confidential Attachment 1.

Expression of Appreciation to Acting Chief Executive Officer
Committee Decision

The Board expressed its sincere appreciation to Mr. Peter Evans for his hard work and dedication while performing his duties as Acting Chief Executive Officer since July 1, 2009; and noted that Mr. Evans has been a champion of the Toronto Zoo for many years, in both his capacity as a Member of the Toronto Zoo Foundation Board from 1993, as a Member of the Board of Management of the Toronto Zoo from 1996-2008, and as Vice-Chair of the Board from 1999-2008.
