Prohibited Waste
Prohibited waste is waste that will not be collected by the City either on its own or mixed with any other waste.  

Also, these items CANNOT be disposed of as waste at City Transfer Stations. This does not mean that some of these items may not qualify for disposal as recycling, green bin material, HHW etc. Prohibited waste is waste that cannot be disposed of in the general waste stream (garbage).
This includes:

  • tires*
  • dead animals
  • sod & grass
  • rocks
  • gravel
  • paints, solvents*
  • pesticides*
  • gasoline
  • needles/syringes*
  • biomedical waste
  • wood greater than 1.2 metres (4 feet) is not accepted at a transfer station, you must cut down to 4 ft length when taking to any of these locations
  • Waste generated as a result of construction, demolition or renovation, including but not limited to soil, drywall, bricks, concrete, concrete or cinder blocks, paving stones, asphalt, scrap metal, and asbestos.
  • pathological waste (biomedical waste)
  • Hazardous waste (except if scheduled residential toxi taxi pick-up)
  • Hazardous industrial waste
  • Combustible liquids
  • broken glass, crockery and other sharp objects not packaged to prevent injury to a person
  • PCB's
  • Automotive parts
  • Hay, straw, animal waste or manure
  • Waste in liquid form (i.e. swill or other organic matter not properly drained and securely wrapped)

Note:

  • Drywall is accepted for recycling ONLY at depots that accept recycling: (please visit the City website for more info.) Not all locations accept recycling, and some only accept specific items (these are noted in the chart).
  • other types of renovation material such as fibreglass bathtubs, toilets, ceiling tiles, ceramic tiles, flooring etc. are accepted as waste. If in doubt, call the transfer station before going in.
  • Any item that contains or may contain asbestos is the owner's responsibility to dispose of in accordance to the regulations set out by the Ministry of the Environment.
