If you live in a second suite and have inadequate heat, light and ventilation, or you are concerned that it is illegal, contact 311 to submit a service request for investigation by Municipal Licensing & Standards.
Note: Non-compliance with Zoning, property standards or Fire Code provisions may necessitate the removal of the second suite.
A second suite is a self-contained apartment (dwelling unit) located within a dwelling and designed for occupancy by a separate household which results in the creation of not more than 2 total suites. There is no quick way to tell if your home meets all of the bylaw requirements for a second suite. Part of the requirements include standards in the Fire Code, Property Standards, Electrical Code and Zoning Bylaw.
Even if the second suite is legal, ML&S will still make referrals to Fire Services to ensure that the second suite meets the requirements of the Fire Code. If required, a referral will be made to Toronto Building even when the second suite is permitted and meets the zoning/property standards requirements.
