Cats

Based on the past experience of Fire Services and Animal Control officers, animals normally come down from trees on their own when they are left alone. They usually go up the tree when they are frightened or hurt.

Owners of cats stuck up in trees must contact a private tree company to have the cat removed.

If a stray cat is observed up a tree for more than 72 hours, or if inclement weather is occurring or expected, contact 311.

Raccoons

Raccoons are nocturnal animals who may sleep in a tree during the day.  Unless they are visibly injured, raccoons in trees are typically doing just fine and not stuck. They will voluntarily climb down at nighttime.

In the cities and suburbs, raccoon will sometimes rest on top of hydro poles, telephone poles or roofs. They do not typically come down during the day when the street is busy with traffic and pedestrians. However, they are almost never stuck.

If a raccoon stays in the same spot on the tree, pole or roof for over 24 hours, contact 311 to be transferred to a Toronto Animal Services Agent for advice between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
