Falling bark:
For some tree species like London Plane, it is normal to see some shedding of bark. If your tree is not a London Plane tree, falling bark may be an indication that the tree is experiencing some insect of disease problems, or that the tree is dead. In this case it should be looked at by a professional arborist.
No leaves in the Spring:
There are a few species of trees that delay the production of leaves in the spring such as the Kentucky coffee tree, ash, honey locust, ginkgo and black walnut. If your tree is not one of these, then it may be an indication that the tree is in poor health and needs to be looked at by a professional. If your tree does not have leaves by late May or June, this is a good indication that your tree is probably dead. This has to be confirmed by an arborist or other tree care professional.
