Prohibited Waste
Prohibited waste is waste that will not be collected by the City either on its own or mixed with any other waste.
Also, these items CANNOT be disposed of as waste at City Transfer Stations. This does not mean that some of these items may not qualify for disposal as recycling, green bin material, HHW etc. Prohibited waste is waste that cannot be disposed of in the general waste stream (garbage).
This includes:
- tires*
- dead animals
- sod & grass
- rocks
- gravel
- paints, solvents*
- pesticides*
- gasoline
- needles/syringes*
- biomedical waste
- wood greater than 1.2 metres (4 feet in length) is not accepted at a transfer station, nails need to be removed from wood prior to disposal at the Transfer Station.
- Waste generated as a result of construction, demolition or renovation, including but not limited to soil, drywall, bricks, concrete, concrete or cinder blocks, paving stones, asphalt, scrap metal, and asbestos.
Note:
- Drywall is accepted as recycling ONLY at depots that accept recycling: (http://www.toronto.ca/garbage/depots.htm) Not all locations accept recycling, and some only accept specific items, please refer to the website above.
- Other types of renovation material such as fibreglass bathtubs, toilets, ceiling tiles, ceramic tiles, flooring etc. are accepted as waste. If in doubt, call the transfer station or check the Waste Wizard on the City of Toronto website.
