Description of Service/Summary:

Road sinking (also referred to as road settlement) occurs when the roadway surface drops, settles, or becomes uneven even though the asphalt surface may remain mostly intact.

Visible signs may include ponding of water or depressions on the road surface.

Road sinking:

  • A depression or dip in the roadway
  • Uneven or lowered pavement
  • Water ponding in the affected area
  • Caused by sub surface settlement or a water leak beneath the road surface
  • There may be little or no visible surface damage, but the road noticeably dips or sinks

How Road Sinking Differs from a Pothole:

  • Road Sinking
    • No hole is present
    • The asphalt surface is intact
    • The area appears lower, uneven, or depressed
    • Water may pool due to lowered elevation
  • Pothole
    • A hole IS present
    • Asphalt is broken or missing
    • Often has rough edges and a visible cavity
