The new Byng Park Playground is open! Thank you to all the community members who provided their feedback throughout the playground improvement process! The old playground is still open to the public but may be decommissioned soon.

The City is planning improvements to the playground in Byng Park. These improvements are part of an ongoing city-wide program to ensure our playgrounds provide safe and accessible fun for many years to come!

  • Early Summer 2021: Community Engagement Survey 1, collect feedback on vision for new playground
  • Fall 2021: Develop playground design options using survey feedback
  • February 2022: Community Engagement Survey 2, collect feedback on multiple playground options.
  • March to April 2022: Detailed design and hire construction team
  • Fall 2022: Construction starts
  • Late Winter 2022: Construction complete, playground reopens

September 2022

Final Playground Design

The final design for the new Byng Park Playground, which has been refined based on community feedback. It will include the play features listed below.

The final playground design and layout was determined using feedback from the community. The new playground will be accessible and will include the following features:

  • A swing set with:
    • four belt swings
    • one toddler swing
    • one accessible swing
  • One senior play structure for ages five to 12 with:
    • one large curved slide
    • two straight slide
    • two climbing options
    • multiple play panels
    • stepping stones
  • One junior play structure for ages two to five with:
    • dual slide

February 2022

Online Survey

From February 11 to February 27, 2022, feedback on multiple playground design options was collected in an online survey. The survey was promoted through paid social media ads, the local Councillor’s office, on-site signage, and on this page. The survey received a total of 110 responses, which included feedback from 180 participants of various ages.

The design team will use this feedback to refine a final design. The final design will be available on this page in spring 2022.

Key Feedback Highlights
  • When asked to rank their playground design preference, respondents ranked Playground Design B highest (54 per cent) followed by Playground Design A (30 per cent) then Playground Design C (15 per cent).
  • Respondents shared that the five most important features to include in the new playground are:
    • senior play structure for ages five to 12
    • belt Swings
    • toddler Swings
    • junior play structure for ages two to five
    • rock climbing structures
  • Respondents shared that the three least important features to include in the new playground are:
    • spring toys
    • stand-up spinner toys
    • seat spinner
  • If budget permits, the three features respondents would like more of in the improved playground are:
    • climbing Structures
    • senior play structure for ages five to12
    • stand-up see-saw
  • The preferred colour scheme for the new playground was bright colours like yellow, orange, and sky blue (61 per cent), over earthy colours, like green, brown, and grey (28 per cent), with 11 per cent having no preference.

July 2021

Online Survey

Feedback on the general preferences for the playground improvements was collected in an online survey from June 28 to July 11, 2021. The survey received a total of 137 responses, which included feedback from 348 individuals.

  • 78% of respondents like the spiral/wavy slide currently in the playground
  • 51% of respondents would like to see more group swings in the new playground design
  • 70% of respondents a bright colour scheme for the new playground

Byng Park Playground is located at 299 Pharmacy Ave., at the southwest corner of the park.

The playground currently includes:

  • Two swing sets, each include:
    • One with four  swings for ages two to five
    • One with four belt swings for ages five and up
  • A two-seater animal see-saw
  • A car play structure with seating and a steering wheel
  • A large play structure with:

    • A larger straight slide
    • A spiral slide

The playground will be redesigned using feedback from the community. The redesigned playground is proposed to include:

  • New playground equipment for ages two to twelve
  • Accessible play equipment and an accessible pathway connecting to the playground area. This means that people of all abilities will be able to play at this playground
  • Woodchip playground surfacing

Improvements will only be made in the general playground area. This will not include any new water or lighting features, or improvements to other areas of the park.
