The new Charlton Park Playground is open!

The City is planning improvements to the playground in Charlton Park! These improvements are part of an ongoing city-wide program to ensure playgrounds provide safe and accessible fun for all.

Project Timeline

  • March to April 2021: Community engagement and finalizing the design
  • Spring 2021: Hiring a construction team
  • Summer to Fall 2021: Construction
  • Winter 2021: Construction complete

Construction for the playground improvements is almost complete and the playground is open to the public.

Final Playground Design

The final playground design and layout was determined using feedback from the community.

The new playground will be accessible and will include the following features:

    • One double slide
    • Two climbing options
  • One senior structure with:
    • Two slides
    • Five climbing options
    • Three connecting bridges
    • Multiple play panels
    • Wheel panel
    • Bongo drum
    • Multiple stump steps
  • One stand-alone toy (Lola the Snail)
  • Three stand-alone play panels
  • A swing set with two belt swings, one tot swing and one accessible swing
  • Quiet Grove (stand-alone play area for quiet/low sensory play)

The layout for the new playground will include:

  • A larger playground area with:
    • Woodchip-like surfacing (called “Engineered Wood Fibre”)
    • An accessible ramp
    • A concrete border around the playground
    • New play equipment
  • An armourstone seat wall
  • A new asphalt pathway connecting the playground to Charlton Blvd.
  • A paved path area with benches and a picnic table

April 2021

Online Survey

Feedback on the proposed playground design was collected in an online survey from April 7 to April 21, 2021. The survey received a total of 83 responses, which included feedback from 209 individuals.

Virtual Public Meeting

A virtual public meeting presented the proposed playground design, which was developed using feedback from the online survey in March. Participants had the opportunity to ask the project team questions and share their feedback.

Online Survey

The survey asked community members for feedback and preferences on multiple playground options. The design team use the feedback collected in this survey to develop a single playground design. The survey received a total of 115 responses, which included feedback from 339 individuals.

Charlton Park is located at 166 Charlton Blvd., near Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue West in North York. The park features a children’s playground and open green space. The playground is being redesigned based on the community’s feedback. The improvements may include:

  • New accessible play equipment
  • An accessible pathway to the playground
  • Additional seating
  • Wood chip safety surfacing (Engineered Wood Fiber)

The City is proposing to replace the playground equipment in the same location while adding seating and an accessible walkway to the playground. All playground equipment replaced will meet accessibility standards.

The playground currently includes:

  • A combined junior and senior play structure with:
    • 4 slides (one small double slide, one small enclosed slide, one spiral slide)
    • 1 spiral climber
    • 1 small crawl tunnel
    • 1 small climbing wall
  • A large stand-alone spiral slide
  • A talk tube telephone
  • Two junior swings
  • A park bench
  • Sand play surfacing under all equipment
