The City is planning improvements to the playground in Cummer Park as part of a state-of-good-repair program to ensure the equipment is in good condition to better serve the community!

Project Timeline

  • 2020 to Winter 2021: Design development and community engagement
  • Summer 2021: Construction

The timeline is subject to change.

Cummer Park is a 4-hectare park located at 823 Cummer Ave., adjacent to the Cummer Park Community Centre in North York. The playground area within the park has reached the end of its life and is being replaced as part of a state-of-good-repair program.

The redesigned playground will include:

  • New playground equipment
  • New accessible pathways
  • New gathering area with shade and seating
  • New woodchip safety surfacing

The playground design will be developed through consultation with the community. The improvements will be to the general playground area, and will not involve any new water or lighting features.

The city is currently consulting on the playground layout and play structure options. Two playground layouts (1 and 2) are proposed below. For each layout, there are two playground structure options (A and B).

Proposed Playground Layout Options

The following images showcase the two proposed layout options for the Cummer Park Playground. There is one rectangular layout and one circular layout. Both options are:

  • Designed in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
  • Similar in size and include woodchip safety surfacing

Both options include:

  • A concrete curb surrounding the playground to contain the woodchip surfacing
  • Upgrades to the drainage system to keep the playground dry
  • An accessible concrete ramp to the playground with an armourstone seatwall (natural stone that serves as seating as well as a path edge)
  • Asphalt pathway connecting the playground area to the parking lot
  • Gathering/seating area with concrete pavement
  • Benches
  • New tree plantings
