The City is improving the playground in Perth Square Park. These improvements are part of an ongoing city-wide program to ensure playgrounds provide safe and accessible fun for many years to come!

Project Timeline

  • Winter 2022: Construction complete, playground reopens

Online Survey

From May 23 to June 5, 2022, feedback on multiple playground design options was collected in an online survey. The survey was promoted through paid social media ads, the local Councillor’s office, on-site signage, and on this page. The survey received a total of 450 complete responses.

The design team will use this feedback to refine a final design. The final design will be available on this page in summer 2022.

Key Feedback Highlights
  • When asked to rank their playground design preference, respondents ranked Design B highest (32 per cent) followed by Design A (27 per cent), Design C (22 per cent), and Design D (18 per cent)
  • Respondents shared that the four most important features to include in the new playground are:
    • the senior play structure for ages five to 12 (43 per cent)
    • the junior play structure for ages two to five (41 per cent)
    • climbing structures (40 per cent)
    • toddler swings (37 per cent)
  • Respondents shared that the four least important playground features to include in the improved playground are:
    • telescope (59 per cent)
    • steering wheel (46 per cent)
    • play panels (35 per cent)
    • spinner toys (27 per cent)
  • If budget permits, the four features respondents would like more of in the improved playground are:
    • climbing structures (41 per cent)
    • toddler swings (36 per cent)
    • belt swings (34 per cent)
    • the senior play structure for ages five to 12 (20 per cent)
  • The preferred colour scheme for the new playground was bright colours, like yellow, orange and purple (49 per cent) over earthy colours, like green, brown and grey (29 per cent). No colour preference was noted by 22 per cent of respondents
  • The preferred type of ground cover for the new playground was wood chips (49 per cent), over sand (33 per cent) and rubber (24 per cent). No preference was noted by 9 per cent of respondents

Additional feedback about the playground improvements were sent to the project team via email and will be considered as part of the design progress.

All four designs are accessible, have the same amount of play features and cost the same amount.

Playground Design Option A

Perth Square Park Playground is located at 350 Perth Ave., near Dupont Street and Dundas Street West.

The playground currently includes:

  • One swing sets with:
    • Three swings for ages two to five
    • Three swings for ages six to 12
  • Two see-saws
  • A junior play structure
  • A senior play structure
  • Two spring toys
  • A carousel
  • A sandbox
  • Sand under all play areas

The playground will be redesigned using feedback from the community. The redesigned playground is proposed to include:

  • Playground equipment for ages two to 12
  • Additional seating
  • Engineered wood fibre playground surfacing
  • Accessible play equipment and an accessible pathway connecting to the playground area. This means that people of all abilities will be able to play at this playground.

Improvements will only be made in the general playground area. This will not include any new water or lighting features, or improvements to other areas of the park.
