The New Thomson Memorial Park Playground is open! Thank you to all the community members who provided their feedback throughout the playground improvement process!

The City is planning improvements to the playground in Thomson Memorial Park as part of an enhancement project to modernize the existing playground with new equipment, seating, accessible pathways and landscaping.

Project Timeline

  • Winter to Spring 2021: Design and community engagement
  • Late Summer to Fall 2021: Construction
  • Late Fall 2021: Construction complete

December 2021

Project Complete

Construction is complete and the new playground opens to the public. The new playground design includes a connection to the existing splash pad and an asphalt path looping around the playground. Additional features include:

  • A junior play structure for ages eighteen months to five years with:
    • one double slide and one curved slide
    • one large rope climber and one spinning rope climber
    • one steering wheel
    • four stepping stones
    • four climbing options
  • A senior play structure for ages five and up with:
    • one accessible slide and one spiral slide
    • multiple elevated and ground-level play panels
    • five climbing options
  • Four belt swings, three toddler swings and one accessible swing
  • A sandbox
  • One standalone spring toy
  • Accessible picnic tables and benches
  • New trees

June 2021

Final Playground Design

Playground Design A will be installed in Thomson Memorial Park. This was the preferred design in the online survey shared with the community in February. A “vippy” see-saw will be added to the design and the playground equipment will be slightly brighter in colour.

February 2021


An online survey was available from February 9 to February 28, 2021. Respondents were able to share their preferences for the new playground equipment coming to Thomson Memorial Park.

Thomson Memorial Park is a 41.8-hectare park located at 1005 Brimley Rd. in Scarborough. The park follows the West Highland Creek and has many paths through the large wooded ravine that let visitors experience nature in the city. The park features a ball diamond, multipurpose sports field, three tennis courts, outdoor fitness equipment, children’s playground, wading pool and a dogs off-leash area.

The existing playground within the park will be enhanced with the following improvements:

  • Accessible pathway
  • Accessible play surfacing
  • New playground equipment for ages two to 14 years
  • Additional accessible seating area with benches
  • New plantings

The project is in the conceptual design phase which will be developed through consultation with the community.
