The City of Toronto, in coordination with the Scarborough Southwest Office, is adding an outdoor fitness pod in a local park and has consulted the local community to identify its location. The Project Team is now progressing with construction drawings for the Birchmount Community Centre site.
The timeline is subject to change.
The community in Scarborough Southwest has shown interest in an outdoor fitness pod within a local park. The City identified three possible locations for the fitness pod and one location was selected based on feedback collected from an online survey conducted in August 2020.
The City is proposing the following fitness equipment and layout for the fitness pod.
The fitness pod is designed as a circuit with three exercise stations that can accommodate twenty-four different exercises for both beginner and advanced fitness levels. The equipment components are easily adaptable and have no moving parts, which increases the equipment’s overall safety and minimizes the need for frequent maintenance. The fitness pod will include the following:
There may be minor adjustments made to the configuration and layout of the equipment.
The City conducted a survey to gather feedback from the community on the location of the outdoor fitness pod. Three locations were presented in the survey, which was available to complete online from August 18 to September 10, 2020. The results of the survey led to the final selection of the location for the fitness pod in Scarborough Southwest.
In total, the survey received 682 total responses. 56% of survey respondents preferred Birchmount Community Centre.

There are three possible locations for the outdoor fitness pod – Birchmount Community Centre, Harrison Properties and Harding Parkette. One location will be selected based on feedback from consultation with the community.
Birchmount Community Centre is located at 93 Birchmount Road, near Birchmount Road and Danforth Avenue. The fitness pod would be located near the front entrance of the community centre, which has high street visibility and is in close proximity to the existing playground, shade structure and the Birchmount Track.
Harrison Properties is a small park located at 1845 Kingston Road, near Kingston Road and Lakehurst Drive. The park is along the Bluffs edge and the Toronto Waterfront Trail alignment. The fitness pod would be located at the south-west area of the park and in view of Lake Ontario. Trail users will have easy access to the fitness pod at this proposed location.
Harding Parkette is a small park located at the corner of Harding Boulevard and Kingsbury Crescent. The park is along the Bluffs edge and the Toronto Waterfront Trail alignment. The fitness pod would be located in close proximity to the neighbouring streets and would be in view of Lake Ontario. Trail users and local residents will have easy access to the fitness pod at this proposed location.
The Scarborough Southwest Office hosted an Open House at Birchmount Community Centre to gather feedback from the community about the project. Two design options for the equipment components were presented for Harrison Properties. The meeting was well-attended and it was decided that the Project Team would consider additional locations for the fitness pod.
