Final Playground Design

The final design for the new Lambton-Kingsway Park Playground, which has been refined based on community feedback. It will include the play features listed below.
The final playground design and layout were determined using feedback from the community. The new playground will be accessible and will include the following features:

  • A new three-metre-wide Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)-compliant asphalt pathway from Prince Edward Drive down to the playground
  • A new central gathering space with three accessible shaded tables (budget dependent)
  • A new playground area with accessible wood fibre safety surfacing, concrete border and an entry ramp
  • New playground equipment with a swing set (space for six swings)
  • A separate swing set (four swings) to the side in existing sand surfacing
  • Eight new benches with memorial plaques arranged around the playground, three of which are connected by a path
  • Proposed relocation of the memorial boulder

The Play Equipment will include:

  • A swing set with:
    • Two belt swings
    • Three toddler swings
    • One accessible swing
  • One combined-ages play structure for ages two to 12 with:
    • One large curved slide (2.4-metre tall)
    • One small curved slide (1.2-metre tall)
    • One small double slide (1.2-metre tall)
    • Five different levels to access
    • Five climbing options from ground level onto the structure
    • One cable bridge on the lower level and one suspension bridge on the upper level
    • Three play panels
    • One steering wheel
    • One games counter and one scale
  • One senior (ages five to 12) climbing structure with ten different climbing options, including balancing, overhead and sideways climbing
  • One stand-alone teeter-totter
  • One stand-alone mining cart spring toy
  • Two spinner toys, including one for standing and one for sitting or lying flat

Online Survey

From December 1 to December 14, 2023, feedback on multiple playground design options was collected in an online survey. The survey was promoted through paid social media ads, outreach to nearby schools, the local Councillor’s office, on-site signage and on this page. The survey received a total of 469 responses.

The design team used this feedback to refine a final design.

Key Feedback Highlights
  • When asked to rank their playground layout preference, respondents ranked Layout Option B highest (67 per cent) followed by Layout Option A (33 per cent).
  • When asked to rank their playground equipment preference, respondents ranked Equipment Option C highest (50 per cent), followed by Equipment Option B (31 per cent) and Equipment Option A (19 per cent).
  • Respondents shared that the three most important features to include in the new playground were:
    • Swings
    • Climbing structures
    • Senior play structure for ages five to 12
  • Respondents shared that the three least important features to include in the new playground are:
    • Play panels
    • Stand-alone toys (spinners, teeter-totter, etc.)
    • Junior play structure for ages two to five
  • When asked about the balance between seating/paving and play equipment:
    • 48 per cent of respondents were happy with the balance shown
    • 45 per cent of respondents preferred more play equipment and less seating/paving
    • Six per cent of respondents preferred more seating/paving and less play equipment
  • When asked about reducing the amount of play equipment to allow for a sandbox or additional swings:
    • 54 per cent of respondents preferred to maintain the amount of equipment shown
    • 28 per cent of respondents preferred a sandbox be included, even if some play equipment or shade tables may need to be removed
    • Eight per cent of respondents preferred an additional swing set off to the side, even if some play equipment or shade tables may need to be removed
    • 10 per cent of respondents indicated none of the above
  • When asked about the number and types of swings:
    • 57 per cent of respondents were happy with the proposed balance
    • 35 per cent of respondents preferred one additional belt swing and one less toddler swing
    • Five per cent of respondents preferred one additional accessible swing and one less bucket or belt swing
    • Three per cent of respondents preferred one additional toddler swing and one less belt swing
  • For seating around the playground:
    • 80 percent of respondents liked benches
    • 64 per cent of respondents liked picnic tables
    • 46 per cent of respondents liked stone seat walls
    • 39 per cent of respondents liked concrete seat walls
  • The preferred colour scheme for the new playground was bright colours like orange, blue and yellow (32 per cent), followed by a mix of earthy and bright colours (27 per cent) and earthy colours (27 per cent).

Lambton-Kingsway Park Playground is located at 37 Marquis Ave. in Etobicoke.

The playground currently includes:

  • Three swing sets with:
    • Six swings for ages two to five
    • Four swings for ages five and up
  • A junior play structure with two small slides
  • A senior play structure with one medium curved slide
  • A covered wooden sandbox area
  • Several stand-alone toys such as a ladybug spring rider and a balance beam
  • Sand and grass under all play areas

The playground and park will be redesigned using feedback from the community. The redesigned playground is proposed to include:

  • Playground equipment for ages two to 12
  • Additional seating
  • Accessible play equipment, accessible surfacing and an accessible pathway connecting to the playground area. This means that people of all abilities will be able to play at this playground.
