The new Toronto Green Standard Tier 1 establishes requirements for native species and water efficient (drought tolerant) species to be used in landscaping for all development within the City of Toronto. The selection of drought tolerant and native plant material in development is important as drought tolerant plants reduce the demand for potable water in landscaping, requiring less maintenance and bringing ecological diversity and seasonal interest to the landscape.
