The recreation centre suffered major damage due to a fire on January 31, 2019, forcing the closure of the Centre and indoor swimming pool.

Given the nature of the damage, staff recommend proceeding with the reconstruction in a phased approach that would enable the arena's ice programming and permits to be reinstated in the next few months, and the centre to return to full operating capacity by the end of 2020.

City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation staff and Councillor Cynthia Lai are hosting a public update meeting Thursday, September 26, 2019 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Upper Hall at the Commander Recreation Centre. 140 Commander Blvd near Brimley Rd and Huntingwood Dr
