Installation of a new water meter
- The meter must be installed at the water service point of entry into the building. Plumbing must be in good condition to accommodate the water meter. There must be heat in the building in winter months.
- On average it takes about 1 hour to install a meter. It may take longer if pipe work is needed.
- New installations are the responsibility of the property owner for all new buildings or where plumbing near, around, or adjacent to a water meter is changed or altered.
- Once the meter is installed, you will pay only for the water you actually use.
Size of a water meter
A typical residential water meter is about 190mm (7-1/2 inches) long x 90 mm (3-5/8 inches) wide X 170mm (6-3/4 inches) high.
Relocating a water meter
- The meter must be installed within 1 metre's distance from the water service point of entry into the building.
- If the point of entry is changed, and all service pipes that exist before that point of entry have been inspected by the City, before being buried under concrete, then the water meter can be moved to the new location.
