The City of Toronto is pleased to offer recycling services for election signs after the he federal election on April 28, 2025. This supports the City of Toronto’s goal to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.  The City of Toronto is accepting three (3) types of election signs for recycling, as well as wooden and metal stakes, this includes:
  • Corrugated plastic (i.e. Coroplast)
  • Fibre based (paperboard)
  • Plastic film (i.e. "sleeve" style signs)

In accordance with the Toronto Municipal Code (Chapter 693, Article II - Election Signs), election signs must be removed within seventy-two (72) hours following the day of the election. The deadline to remove signs is Thursday, May 1, 2025.

Please bring any used and surplus election signs to one of the following Drop-Off Depot locations for proper disposal.  Signs will be accepted until Friday, May 23, 2025.  Note the hours of operation specific to each site.

Disposal instructions:

  • Separate all wooden stakes, metal supports, and screws from the signs;
  • Consolidate plastic sleeve signs in a clear plastic bag and tie shut when full;
  • Remove all staples from the signs and dispose of them in the garbage.  Staples damage recycling equipment, therefore, any signs with staples will be considered garbage and a fee will be charged to dispose of them.

Please do not:

  • Bundle your corrugated plastic signs;
  • Mix signs made of different materials.

Disposal costs:

  • There is no fee for dropping off separated clean corrugated plastic, paperboard, and plastic film election signs, associated supports, and stakes for recycling;
  • Unseparated mixed waste that includes election signs will be charged at our regular fee of $183.00 per metric tonne of material with a minimum $18.00 flat fee for the first 100kg.
