If you are in an elevator that is stuck, use the panic phone or button inside the elevator.
The Elevating Device regulations and code (ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators, Section 2.27) stipulate that the emergency phone inside an elevator must connect to a location staffed by authorized personnel who can take appropriate action. This would not be 911. Typically, it is a security monitoring company, if it is off-site, or it could be an on-site location. The call must be answered within 45 seconds. If it is not answered within 45 seconds at the first location, it must automatically transfer to a second staffed location. The code does not stipulate how long the phone may ring at the second location, only that the location must be staffed with authorized personnel.
