Description of Service/Summary:
A pedestrian crossover (PXO) is a device where a pedestrian presses the button and the overhead lights begin flashing immediately to stop traffic and allow a safe crossing.
How to Report a Concerns Related to PXOs:
Contact 311 to submit a service request (SR) for any of the following related to the pedestrian crossover:
- General safety concerns at or near a PXO (including issues like hanging icicles on signage/equipment).
- Concerns about the operation of a PXO, including signage, markings, or added features (e.g. zebra markings, advance PXO ahead signage).
- Reports that a PXO is not safe, motorists fail to stop, or that pedestrian–vehicle collisions have occurred at a PXO.
Types of Investigations:
- Safety Problem Investigation (Transportation Services): Triggered when a potential PXO safety issue is reported. Staff undertake a detailed safety review, including:
- Comparing the location to relevant environmental standards to determine whether the PXO is unsuitable or potentially unsafe.
- Field observations during peak periods to record pedestrian crossing behavior (e.g., unsafe crossings, use of push buttons) and potential vehicle conflicts.
- Reviewing Toronto Police Service collision records for trend analysis indicative of a safety problem.
- Operational / Signage Investigation: Initiated when the public reports operational issues or requests operational enhancements at a PXO, such as:
- Requests for added features (e.g., additional advance PXO ahead signage or zebra markings).
- Patterns of motorists not stopping at the PXO or perceived unsafe operations.
Additional Information:
When a potential crossover (PXO) safety issue is brought to the attention of Transportation staff, a detailed review process is initiated, which compares the location against the previously described "environmental standards" that could show that a crossover (PXO) is unsuitable or potentially unsafe. In addition to this review, staff observe pedestrian crossings during peak periods and record data such as unsafe pedestrian crossings, utilization of pedestrian push buttons and potential vehicle conflicts. The Toronto Police Service collision records are also reviewed to identify any collision trends, which may be indicative of a safety problem.
