The City of Toronto entered into a contractual agreement with Astral Out-of-Home in 2007 for the installation and maintenance of up to 25,000 street furniture elements over the 20-year term of the agreement. This program is a public-private partnership wherein Astral manufactures, owns, cleans and repairs all of their street furniture within the City of Toronto, at no cost to the taxpayer, in exchange for managing the advertising rights on the transit shelters and info pillars.

Astral Out-of-Home provides routine maintenance, including poster removal on the transit shelters in the City of Toronto on a weekly basis. Whenever a complaint is received, a crew is dispatched to deal with the matter.
Washroom doors open automatically after 20 minutes. If a patron wants to leave earlier than that, there are 2 buttons they can push to activate the sliding door. One button is located in the vicinity of the door handle and the other one is located at floor level for foot operation or use by someone who has fallen. If someone remains in the washroom after 20 minutes, a load cell in the floor detects the weight and the washroom's control system will send an alarm signal to Astral, who will dispatch a crew to investigate. In the event of a power outage, an alarm is sent to Astral to dispatch a crew and, if required, they can evacuate a washroom patron via the roof escape hatch. There is also an emergency button beside the door that will connect the occupant directly to Astral to speak with someone.
Note: Installation and maintenance issues about the New vehicle information system (the new vehicle information system provides TTC customers with predicted arrival & departure times for buses and streetcars, are the responsibility of TTC .
