Environment and Climate Change Canada is conducting a large research study of winter air quality (SWAPIT) across a number of sites in Toronto, including High Park. There are over 100 scientific and technical experts involved as well as a further 100 stakeholders who will use the results of this work.

Background:
A great deal of air pollution research has focused on smog, which tends to occur in summer.  We now know that levels of some pollutants are highest in winter as winter is different from the rest of the year in terms of its colder weather and pollutant emissions from indoor heating or de-icing of road and aircraft surfaces.  Understanding the way that pollutants are emitted and transformed in all seasons helps in the design of effective management strategies, and conducting SWAPIT in winter allows us to improve our knowledge during that time of year.

The study site in High Park will be taking place for approximately 6 weeks, ending March 10. The study location is taking place on the west baseball diamond and a small adjacent grassy area. Contracted security will be on site 24/7 to keep an eye on the research equipment during the study period.
