Description of Service/Summary:

Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is an invasive tree species.

In December 2023, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (OMNRF) identified this tree as ‘restricted’ under the Invasive Species Act. Restricted means that this species is not desirable, and that it is illegal to propagate, sell nursery stock, transplant and transport individuals of this species.

Ownership and Protected Status:

It is not illegal to ‘possess’ this species. No one with a Tree of Heaven tree on their property would be required under the Act to remove it.

While invasive, these trees still provide certain ecosystem services to the city and its residents. This species is still protected by the City's tree bylaws.
