Military Trail is now open for travel. Work crews will continue to complete installation of the guardrail and site clean-up next week.

The City of Toronto has reconstructed the road on Military Trail from Ellesmere Road to Highcastle Road. A new sidewalk was constructed on the west side along the entire length of Military Trail, and retaining walls constructed on segments of the street to improve slope stability. In an effort to improve safety, new handrails and guardrails will be installed on sections of the new sidewalk and the speed limit on Military Trail reduced to 30 km/h. Additional street lighting has also been installed along Military Trail.

The road reconstruction of Military Trail, from Ellesmere Road to Highcastle Road started in February 2022. The project has experienced a significant delay due to modifications required to the slopes and grades of the roadway.

Work was paused while a solution was identified to correct the deficiencies.  The identified solution includes regrading, curb adjustments and road repaving.  While this work is taking place, the contractor will also be activating the new street lighting.

During construction, this section of Military Trail remains closed to all pedestrian, cyclists and vehicular traffic.

Originally scheduled to start in 2020, this work was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.  The start dates was again impacted when Toronto Water had to undertake emergency repairs to the storm sewer outfall in Upper East Highland Creek, between Highway 401 and Military Trail (adjacent to 40 and 42 Creekwood Drive), including adding a rip-rap wall within the creek. This emergency repair work was needed to protect the exposed storm sewer outfall that had become damaged due to erosion and prevent damage to the existing storm sewer and adjacent sanitary sewer.

A Public Drop-In Event was held at Seven Oaks Park Community BBQ on August 14, 2019, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Approximately 30 people attended the drop-in event. View the Presentation Boards.

Road Reconstruction

  • Following the watermain break in early 2017, the City temporarily fixed the road and now road reconstruction is required as a permanent repair.
  • Road reconstruction involves the removal of the existing road base which is rebuilt to current City standards.

Road Realignment

  • The road will be realigned to accommodate a new sidewalk.
  • Retaining walls in the form of armour stone walls and vegetated soil retaining walls are required for soil stabilization as a result of the road realignment.
  • Trees will be removed to allow the new road and sidewalk to be installed.

Sidewalk

  • A new sidewalk will be constructed on the west side of Military Trail for the entire length of road.
  • New guiderails and handrails will be installed along sections of the new sidewalk.

Green Infrastructure

  • Green infrastructure will be installed by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to capture storm water runoff from the new road.
  • Water run off will be captured and filtered through stone treatments at various locations along the road and be dispersed to the surrounding grassed area. The design, provided by TRCA, maintains environmental integrity and integration into the existing eco structure.
  • This Green Infrastructure will also reduce the impact on the City’s current storm water infrastructure.

Bridge Rehabilitation

  • The Military Trail bridge over Highland Creek will be rehabilitated to meet modern standards.
  • The sidewalk, parapet walls and bearings will be replaced.
  • Deteriorated concrete will be repaired.
  • The bridge will be re-waterproofed and repaved.
