Mayor John Tory and members of Toronto City Council will be joined by members of the Consular Corps and the Canadian Armed Forces to welcome veterans, their families and the public to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. This year’s ceremony is timed to coincide with the D-Day landing of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, which included Toronto’s Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, on Juno Beach in Normandy, France.

Date:  Thursday, June 6
Time:  7:30 a.m.
Location: Old City Hall Cenotaph, 60 Queen St. W.

This year’s honoured guest speaker is Captain Martin Maxwell of the Glider Pilot Regiment, British 6th Airborne Division. He was among the first few to land in Normandy the night before D-Day and helped capture the bridges behind enemy lines, which stopped the enemy from sending reinforcements.

This year, the City of Toronto also undertook several other commemorative activities to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, including arranging for the flying of the City flag on Juno Beach, hosting a Legion of Honour Investiture of William George Carpenter, a Canadian Artillery Veteran at Kipling Acres, and co-hosting the Journey across Canada – Toronto Ceremony at Union Station with Veteran Affairs Canada.
