Since early July, the City of Toronto has already delivered more than 380 portable air conditioner units to low-income seniors across Toronto. This air conditioner pilot program, a $200,000 dollar initiative outlined in the City’s 2025 budget priorities, will soon result in 500 units being provided to those in need across the city.
The Air Conditioning Assistance Program, launched this Spring, is coordinating the delivery and in-suite installation at no cost to recipients. More information on the program is available on the City’s website: Air Conditioner Assistance Program – City of Toronto
Toronto is experiencing the effects of climate change through frequent, extended heat events, making it important to create policies and programs that address the excessive temperatures that put people in danger during the summer.
More than 500 Cool Spaces
This program complements the City’s ongoing annual measures to protect people from hot weather. The City’s Heat Relief Network provides access to more than 500 cool spaces across Toronto including libraries, community centres and pools so people can seek relief from the heat in a location close to them. For the duration of this Heat Warning the City has activated the Metro Hall lobby area (Rotunda) as a 24/7 Cool Space.
Quotes:
“Everyone needs a safe and comfortable place to call home. This year, we have already seen three historic heat waves which can be dangerous and even deadly. At City Hall, we are stepping up with a new pilot program to provide 500 free air conditioners to low-income seniors, who are the most vulnerable. We are working in collaboration with tenant advocates to ensure safe and affordable homes for renters in our city.”
– Mayor Olivia Chow
“This is a great pilot program and an example of the supports we must continue developing in response to the increase in extreme hot weather Toronto is expected to experience in the coming years.”
– Councillor Paula Fletcher (Toronto-Danforth)
