News Release
May 8, 2025

Today, Mayor Olivia Chow, Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie (Scarborough-Rouge Park), Councillor Shelley Carroll (Don Valley North) and Jim Jessop, Fire Chief and General Manager, Toronto Fire Services, proudly welcomed the first two electric pumper trucks to the City of Toronto’s frontline fleet. This marks a significant step forward in Toronto Fire Services’ ongoing efforts to embrace innovative technologies and reduce its environmental impact without compromising emergency response capability.

The new pumper trucks are built to meet the full demands of frontline emergency response, delivering similar pumping capacity and reliability as traditional diesel units, while producing zero emissions. Each vehicle is fully compliant with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1901 Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus.

Designed with operational continuity in mind, the electric trucks align closely with the existing Toronto Fire Services fleet in both appearance and function. This consistency minimizes the need for specialized training, allowing crews to get the new vehicles into service sooner and with minimal transition time.

Key Features include:

  • Fully electric drivetrain and fire pump system
  • Lower noise output while driving and during operation
  • Zero tailpipe emissions
  • Range extended operation compared to diesel pumper trucks
  • Identical maneuverability as existing non-electric pumper trucks

The vehicles are being deployed at Fire Stations 115 and 116, following final equipment outfitting and firefighter training and will be put in service by Q3 2025.

The arrival of the electric pumper trucks highlights Toronto Fire Services’ commitment to advancing fire service technology while supporting a cleaner, more efficient emergency response model.

While City vehicles are essential to the delivery of critical services, they are among the highest contributors to the City’s corporate emissions. In response, the City has committed to transitioning its fleets to sustainable, resilient, net-zero operations by 2040. Overall, the City has more than 455 electric or hybrid vehicles across its fleet. More information is available on the Sustainable City of Toronto Fleets plan webpage.
