The City of Toronto’s Fire Services has welcomed a potentially life-saving donation of combination smoke/carbon-monoxide alarms from Enbridge Gas Inc. More than 800 of the alarms will be delivered to Community Centre 55 for distribution in the centre’s Share a Christmas program, which provides food and gifts to many families in east-side Toronto during December.

This donation of Kidde 10-year combination alarms (worth approximately $50,000 in total) is part of Project Zero, a program that gives fire departments in the Enbridge Gas Inc. service area in Ontario combination smoke/carbon-monoxide alarms for community distribution.

Toronto Fire Services recognizes that fires tend to increase during the holiday season and wants to place extra emphasis on home safety.

Quotes:

“Smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms are every family’s most important line of defence against tragedies. We appreciate being a recipient of these Project Zero alarms. When coupled with a practised home escape plan, they can ensure that the holiday season is remembered for the right reasons.”
– Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg

“Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer for a reason, and we have proof that alarms save lives. The best way to avoid carbon-monoxide exposure is to eliminate it at the source by properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment, and alarms are a critical second line of defense to protect against carbon-monoxide poisoning.”
– Tracey Teed Martin, Director of Toronto Region Operations, Enbridge Gas Inc.

“The objective of Project Zero is to deliver combination smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms to Ontario communities that need them the most. It’s a program that municipal fire departments can adopt to help educate their communities about the requirement for all Ontario homes to have a carbon-monoxide alarm if they have a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage.”
– Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chief of Emergency Management

“We are excited about this donation of much-needed smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. For the past 38 years, Centre 55 has been providing Christmas to east-end families in need.”
– Debbie Visconti, Executive Director of Centre 55
