Mayor John Tory and Fire Chief Matthew Pegg will welcome 24 new recruits to the Toronto Fire Services (TFS) team at a graduation ceremony on Friday afternoon. The new recruits have completed the required training to join Fire Services’ Fire Prevention Division, and the Analytics and Decision Support & Communications Divisions.

The graduates include qualified fire inspectors and public educators, call taker/dispatchers, and data analysts.

“Fire inspectors, call taker/dispatchers, and data analysts are welcome additions to our team and their new roles within the City of Toronto will demand expertise and professionalism every single day,” said Chief Pegg.

Fire prevention inspectors were trained using the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) curriculum and all the graduates are Ontario-certified Level 1 inspectors and educators.

This is a diverse class of the recruits, with many of the graduates able to speak languages other than English, including Polish and American Sign Language.

A fire inspector’s job includes the following four primary activities:
• fire inspections for all types of buildings in Toronto to ensure compliance with the Ontario Fire Code (OFC)
• issuance of inspection orders to check for OFC compliance
• court appearances involving property owners who fail to comply with the code
• plan examination to ensure new buildings comply with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) with respect to fire protection.

A call taker/dispatcher’s job includes the following four primary activities:
• Facilitates 911/tiered public safety answering point (PSAP) specific to TFS ‘all hazards’ response.
• dispatching of the required resources in order to mitigate emergencies  
• managing the flow of incident-related information to and from the emergency responders and/or community agency resources
• managing the emergency scene status of fire fighters, and assigning additional resources

Data analysts enable evidence-based decision making within TFS through the use of state-of-the-art analytics powered by quality data. Their mission is to deliver timely and insightful information while also promoting the use of analytic capabilities throughout the organization.
