Use of BBQ on a balcony

Back to Search

Under the Fire Code, there are no restrictions on balcony barbecues. There are however, guidelines regarding outdoor propane and natural gas tanks, under the Ontario Propane and Natural Gas Codes, which must be followed. These are administered by Technical Standards and Safety Authority.

Note: if the building owner or condominium board of directors restrict the use of barbeques on balconies in either the lease agreement or the corporation bylaws, tenant/owner would have to abide by those restrictions.

Transporting of Propane Cylinders in elevators
A service elevator must be used to transport the cylinder. If there is no service elevator in the building, then the person must be alone in a passenger elevator during the transport of the cylinder. Regulated by the CSA - Canadian Standards Association B149.1 - Natural Gas & Propane Code. For more information, please visit the CSA group website.
