The City of Toronto is committed to a workplace that is free from harassment and discrimination and is representative of the citizens it serves. We encourage applications from women, Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and visible minority group members.

A Diversity and Positive Workplace Strategy (pdf) has been developed to advance the City of Toronto's efforts to foster an organizational culture that values and champions employment equity, cultural diversity, ethical behaviour, anti-racism and positive, respectful workplace relationships.

Accommodation in Employment and in the Hiring Process
The City of Toronto values individual differences, respects individual needs, and supports accessibility, diversity and fairness in our treatment of all individuals. The City's goal is to establish and maintain an inclusive workplace, and to provide workplace accommodation as required under the City of Toronto Human Rights and Anti-Harassment Policy and the Ontario Human Rights Code. Special needs will be accommodated in all aspects of the hiring process.

Profession to Profession: Mentoring Immigrants Program

Co-Op Engineering
The Co-Op Engineering program, a partnership between the City's Technical Services Division and the Toronto District School Board's adult education program provided 50 foreign-trained professional engineers with the opportunity to gain Canadian employment experience. The City in turn was provided with a skilled labor pool with which to complete a major data warehousing project related to upgrading the City's water management system. Productivity improved, and 35 new immigrants eventually obtained permanent employment within or close to the city.

Career Edge/Career Bridge/Ability Edge
Career Edge is a not-for-profit organization that operates three innovative programs that the City of Toronto is proud to participate in by recruiting interns for placements in our organization:

Career Bridge for internationally qualified professionals designed to eliminate the significant employment barriers often faced by qualified and experienced foreign trained professionals who are eager and ready to resume their careers in Canada

Ability Edge assists graduates with self-declared disabilities in gaining career-building work experience.

Career Edge for recent graduates from Canadian universities and colleges in all disciplines

For more information visit Career Edge.

The Diversity and Positive Workplace Strategy (pdf) vision is that the City of Toronto is a leader in service delivery because of its positive and productive work environment that is inclusive and reflective of the diverse community it serves. The Career Edge programs are one several leading edge practices within the City that support a diverse and positive workplace and demonstrate the Toronto Public Service values of service, stewardship and commitment.
