Coffee cups, and disposable hot drink cups/lids in general, are not recyclable in Toronto's Blue Bin program. The City of Toronto studied the possibility of adding hot drink cups to the Blue Bin program in 2009 and found that:

  • Adding hot drink cups to the recycling system in Toronto would pose difficulty in sorting, separating and marketing the material to recyclers
  • There is no paper recycling market available to the City of Toronto that is currently willing to take post-consumer poly-coat paper cups from our recycling system.  The paper used to make coffee cups is a low grade paper (little value)
  • Disposable coffee cup lids are accepted in the blue bin program as long as they are not black or compostable plastic (brown lids can be placed in recycling). Remember to rinse the lids first (if necessary and possible) before placing them in the blue bin.

Staff are continuing to assess processing and marketing issues related to coffee cups to determine whether it is possible for them to be recycled.
