Guided tours of City Hall are available for school groups in grade 5 and older. Students will explore the building’s unique features, discover City Hall’s history, and learn what your local government does, how it works, and how to get involved.

About City Hall Tours

  • Tours are free and last approximately 90 minutes. Tours begin at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.
  • The minimum school group size is 10 participants and the maximum is 30. Requests for larger groups, such as two classes from one school, will be considered when possible.
  • Tours must be booked in advance.
  • Visitors to City Hall must go through security screening to participate in the tour.
  • Depending on the date of the tour, schools may get to observe a City Council meeting in action, or visit the Council Chamber up close when it is empty.
  • Toronto City Hall is located at 100 Queen Street West. Please meet the Tour Guide outside the front doors of City Hall, on the south side of the building facing Nathan Phillips Square.
  • If you are arriving by public transit, the Osgoode subway station, Queen subway station, 501 Queen streetcar, 505 Dundas streetcar, and the 19 Bay Street bus all stop within walking distance of City Hall.
  • If you are arriving by school bus, there is limited space along Queen Street in front of City Hall where buses may be able to drop-off and pick up passengers. Spaces are not guaranteed.
  • If you are arriving by private vehicle, paid Green P parking is available underneath Nathan Phillips Square, accessible off Chestnut, Bay, and Queen Street, and on some nearby streets – check parking signs for details.

Tours of City Hall begin on Nathan Phillips Square, except in cases of bad weather. After entering the building, visitors will have to pass through security screening to continue on their tour.

Please note that if your group arrives late, your tour might not be able to continue beyond the originally scheduled time and may be cut short.

All visitors to City Hall must go through security screening after entering the building. To prevent any delays on the tour, please avoid bringing large bags and any unnecessary or prohibited items. Items which are prohibited must be surrendered to Security staff and will not be returned.

  • Depending on the date of the tour, your group may get to observe a City Council meeting in action, or you might visit the Council Chamber when it is empty, allowing you to learn more about the space and what happens there.
  • Tour requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Your preferred date and time might not be able to be accommodated.
  • Please note that your tour booking may need to change due to Council activities or other unforeseen events at City Hall.

To book and participate in a City Hall tour, teachers and tour group leaders must agree to and comply with all the City Hall Tour requirements set out below, which are designed to maintain a safe environment and create a positive and enjoyable visit for everyone:

  • The maximum and minimum group sizes are specified at the time of booking. The group size must not exceed the specified limit to comply with occupancy loads set out in the Ontario Building Code and Fire Code.
  • Respectful behaviour is expected throughout the tour, and disruptive or inappropriate conduct may result in immediate removal from the promises. All visitors should comply with City policies, including the Hate Activity Policy.
  • Food and beverages are not allowed during the tour. Please use the designated areas for eating and drinking.
  • Photography and filming may be allowed only in designated areas. Please check with City staff tour leaders before taking pictures or filming.

The City of Toronto is not responsible for any damaged, lost, stolen, or misplaced items left on the property.
