The City is proposing to add a new basketball court to Park Lawn Park. The proposed location for the new court is south of the baseball diamond and north of the multi-purpose sports field, which will be shifted south.
  • May to July 2026: Hire a design team, community engagement and design development
  • August 2026: Detailed design
  • Winter 2026: Hire a construction team
  • Spring 2027: Construction starts
  • Late Spring 2027: Construction complete

Online Survey

From June 22 to July 22, an online survey collected feedback from 432 community members on the proposed basketball court at Park Lawn Park.

Feedback Summary

Overall, 83 per cent of respondents supported adding a basketball court to Park Lawn Park, 13 per cent did not support adding a court and three per cent were unsure.

Respondents were asked what type of seating they would like near the court. The three most desired types of seating were:

  • Benches (71 per cent)
  • Tables with shade umbrellas (69 per cent)
  • Picnic tables (50 per cent)

Respondents who supported adding a basketball court to Park Lawn Park were asked to share why. The top reasons included:

  • The courts matching the active recreational character of the park (83 per cent)
  • The value of basketball as good exercise (77 per cent)
  • The accessibility of basketball as it doesn’t require much gear (76 per cent)
  • Personal enjoyment of playing or watching basketball (71 per cent)

Respondents who did not support adding a basketball court to Park Lawn Park were asked to share why. The top reasons included:

  • The neighbouring school already has a basketball court (31 per cent)
  • Concerns over the loss of green space that would accompany adding asphalt for the court (29 per cent)
  • Concerns about potential increase in noise from players (25 per cent)
  • Concerns about changes to the multi-purpose sports field (21 per cent)

Respondents who were unsure about adding a basketball court to Park Lawn Park were asked to share why. The top reasons included:

  • Concerns about potential increase in noise from players (36 per cent)
  • Concerns about night usage (21 per cent)
  • Concerns about litter (21 per cent)
  • Concerns about changes to the multi-purpose sports field (21 per cent)

71 respondents provided additional comments related to the basketball court. Top themes in their comments included:

  • Comments reiterating support for a new basketball court (32 per cent)
  • Requests for certain types of seating (13 per cent)
  • Requests for night lighting for the courts (13 per cent)
  • Requests for certain types of basketball features such as lower rims (13 per cent)
