Level of Engagement

This project has been classified as a Consult project based on the International Association for Public Participation's Spectrum. This means we invite community feedback on ideas for how the expanded park area could be used, and this input will help inform the development of the final design.

In this phase, the City collected community input on the vision and priorities for the expanded park area. This feedback will help inform the development of design options for the expanded area.

July 2026

In-Person Pop-up Event

On July 8, the project team collected community feedback on visions for the expanded park area at a pop-up event in Raccoon Park. Approximately 40 community members attended the event.

Key Feedback Highlights

As part of a “Future You Has Mail” activity, participants wrote messages on postcards from the future about fun activities at the new park.

Of the 37 total postcards, the most frequently commented ideas were:

  • Off-leash dog area (12 comments)
  • Sports courts/fields (eight comments) – mainly soccer, plus basketball, volleyball and tennis/pickleball
  • Playground equipment (eight comments) – swings, slides and climbing features
  • Seating, rest areas (eight comments)
  • Green space, shade (seven comments)
  • Lighting and safety (six comments) and gardens/flowers/planters (six comments)
  • Water features (four comments)
  • Senior-friendly amenities/design (four comments)
  • Public art (three comments)
  • Community/social space (two comments)
  • Outdoor fitness (two comments)

Online Thought Exchange Activity

From April 16 to May 14, an interactive thought exchange activity collected ideas to help shape a vision for the expanded park area.

Respondents identified what they would most like to do in an expanded Raccoon Park. Results are ranked from most to least popular below (843 respondents):

  • Relaxing on open green space – 64 per cent (543)
  • Sitting and eating/picnicking – 51per cent (426)
  • Spending quiet time outdoors – 48 per cent (401)
  • Active play (running, sports, games) – 44 per cent (367)
  • Exercising or working out – 29 per cent (247)
  • Walking or cycling through – 29 per cent (246)
  • Playing games with friends and family (e.g. table/board games) – 25 per cent (214)

Respondents identified the features they felt were most important to the expansion of Raccoon Park, ranked from most to least popular below (829 respondents):

  • Trees and greenery – 77 per cent (637)
  • Shade structures – 43 per cent (359)
  • Lots of seating – 38 per cent (318)
  • Quiet, reflective space – 35 per cent (293)
  • Other – 29 per cent (240)
  • Outdoor fitness equipment – 25 per cent (204)
  • Public art (e.g. mural, site furnishings) – 20 per cent (166)
  • Basketball court – 19 per cent (160)
  • Pickleball court – 18 per cent (153)
  • Skateboarding feature – five per cent (44)
  • Ball hockey court – four per cent (30)

Respondents were asked to complete the sentence “The expanded area of Raccoon Park should be a place where…” Comments that were highly rated by participants included:

  • “Lots of green! More green space is needed in this area where there is so much construction”
  • “We can enjoy outdoor space and nature. Feel grounded and naturally re-energize. Huge lack of green space & nature in such a densely, heavily developed area”
  • “The neighbourhood can gather in a safe, pedestrian-centric and welcoming space.”
