The City is adding a new fitness area in Scotia Parkette along the existing pathway. The design will be informed by community feedback and include outdoor fitness equipment, such as pull-up bars and step benches, with instruction panels at each station to support adults of varying fitness levels.

    Level of Engagement

This project has been classified as a Consult project based on the International Association of Public Participation Spectrum. This means we collect and consider public feedback on a proposed design to inform the development of a final design for the fitness area.

    January 2026

    Online Survey

From December 1 to January 8, an online survey collected feedback from 87 respondents on the proposed design and equipment options for the new fitness area.

The survey was promoted through social media, on-site signage, the project mailing list, outreach to nearby community organizations, the local Councillor’s office and this page.

The project team will use this feedback to develop the final design.

    Feedback Summary

Overall, 71 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the proposed design for the fitness area, 14 per cent were neutral and 15 per cent were dissatisfied.

Respondents shared that the four most important types of equipment to include in the fitness area are:

    • balance step (37 per cent)
    • multi-level parallel bars (35 per cent)
    • pull-up bars (34 per cent)
    • assisted row and push-up (34 per cent)

25 respondents provided additional feedback on how to make the fitness area more welcoming and accessible to all community members. Common themes included:

    • requests for specific fitness equipment, such as a stationary bicycle and workout bench (seven comments)
    • opposition to the fitness area (four comments)
    • suggestions to locate the fitness area elsewhere in the parkette (two comments)
    • concerns about the wood fibre safety surfacing (two comments)

Other comments outside the project scope included requests for more seating and features for children in the parkette.

    December 2025

    In-Person Pop-Up Event

On December 3, the project team held a pop-up event at Birchmount Community Centre from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. to collect feedback on the proposed design and equipment options for the new fitness area. Approximately 74 community members participated in the event. A staff member of the local Councillor’s office was in attendance.

Participants used dot stickers and sticky notes to share their preferences and comments.

The project team will use this feedback to develop the final design.

    Feedback Summary

Overall, 25 participants were satisfied with the proposed design for the fitness area, two were neutral and one was dissatisfied.

Participants shared that the four most important types of equipment to include in the fitness area are:

    • push-up bars (30 votes)
    • pull-up bars (25 votes)
    • long bench (21 votes)
    • balance step (20 votes)

Seven participants provided additional feedback on how to make the fitness area more welcoming and accessible to all community members. Common themes included:
