Abandoned Appliances

• Abandoned appliances are a public safety concern, particularly for young children who could become trapped inside.
• Doors and locks of refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and dryers must be removed before they are put out for garbage collection.
• Refrigerators should be turned on their side to prevent injury

If you see an abandoned appliance that does not have its door removed, contact 311. A Bylaw Enforcement Officer will contact the property owner and require the appliance doors to be removed right away. The appliance must also be stored properly and kept in compliance with the bylaw until the next scheduled collection date.

If an appliance is found on private property and the owner cannot be contacted, a Notice of Violation will be issued. The appliance doors will be removed or secured to eliminate any safety risk.

If an appliance is found on City property, the appliance doors will be removed or secured to eliminate any safety risk, and the appliance will be reported for immediate removal.
