As of Sunday August 30, 2026 the Office of the Registrar General is launching the province wide Electronic Death Registration system (EDR). As the City of Toronto has not been onboarded to the new EDR system the process of obtaining a burial permit and registering a death remains the same.

Please submit a request for a burial permit through the City of Toronto’s Online Burial Portal and upload the required documents as usual. If you have been onboarded to EDR as a funeral service provider, you can submit electronic copies of the documents in place of the paper-based version you previously provided.  Please ensure to still submit all documents to Registry Services in a timely manner.

The City’s Online Burial Permit Portal provides funeral service providers with a secure means of providing the Deputy Registrar with the necessary forms for the electronic issuance of a burial permit. Inquiries or questions should be directed to the City Clerk’s Office, Registry Services at 416–392-7036 or by email to registryservices@toronto.ca.

If you are not a current user of the City’s Online Burial Permit Portal and would like more information on how to get started, please email registryservices@toronto.ca.
