Description of Service / Summary:

Residents can request repair or replacement of a damaged or missing green bin online at https://www.toronto.ca/311
or by calling 311. Repairs are completed within 5 business days, with up to two service attempts. There is no fee for repairs to garbage (grey) and organics (green) bins.

How to Submit a Service Request

You can submit a request for a damaged or missing green bin:

Before submitting your request, ensure you have the serial number from the front of the bin. This helps confirm the bin is assigned to your address.

Examples of serial numbers:

  • Garbage bin: 65G######
  • Organics bin: 26O######

Include the serial number in your online request or provide it when calling 311. The contractor will confirm the bin belongs to your address before replacement.

Repair Timeline and Service Attempts

  • Repairs are typically completed within 5 business days.
  • Two repair attempts will be made.
  • If the first attempt is not successful, a second attempt will occur within 5 business days.
  • Do not submit another service request until both attempts have been completed.
  • If your bin has not been repaired or replaced after two attempts, contact 311.
  • Repairs are completed by a company under contract with the City.
  • There is no fee for bin repairs.
  • Graffiti is considered damage and qualifies for repair.

Preparing Your Bin for Repair

To help ensure successful service:

  • Place the bin on private property, where available.
  • Make sure it is visible and accessible from the street.
  • If you do not have private property, inform 311 where the bin is stored so the contractor can access it.
  • You must place the bin at the curb as usual on collection day. After collection, return it to private property for repair.
  • If you have laneway collection, place the bin at the front of your property for repair or exchange.

You may continue using your bin for collection or storage while waiting for repair.

Special Instructions for Apartments Above Businesses

For apartments above businesses without private property space:

  • The bin must be visible and accessible from the street line or a designated access point.
  • Bins cannot remain on City property for more than 24 hours.
  • Provide 311 with the exact storage location (for example, laneway or alleyway) so the contractor can access it for repair or replacement.

Missing Green Bin

If your green bin is missing, you can continue to set out organics while waiting for a replacement.

  • Place materials in a clear plastic bag.
  • Set the bag at the curb on collection day.
  • Ensure the bag does not exceed 20 kg (44 lbs).

Laneway Collection Properties – Bin Exchanges and Repairs

  • For residential and RUAC properties that receive collection in a laneway:
  • Place your bin at the front of your property for exchanges or repairs.
If your bin was missed due to a repair or exchange, submit a service request by calling 311 or online at http://www.toronto.ca/311/

Disposal of Old Garbage, Recycling, or Green Bins

If you no longer need old garbage cans (metal or plastic), blue or grey boxes, or old-style green bins:

  • Set the item out as oversized garbage on collection day.
  • Place a sign on the container that says “For Garbage Pick Up.”
  • No tag is required.
