All sidewalks are now cleared by City crews.  Snow-clearing operations will be activated when 2 cm or more has accumulated, between November 8th and  April 7th.

If snowfall accumulation is 2 cm or less in depth, it is up to residents and businesses to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice within 12 hours of the end of a snowfall.

Property owners are responsible for clearing ice and snow from private property - including driveways, parking spaces, steps, ramps and landings - within 24 hours after a snowfall ends to provide safe access for people and vehicles.

If the 2 cm threshold for sidewalk snow clearing has not been reached or ice build-up occurs after the City plows have completed their routes, it is the responsibility of homeowners/occupants and businesses to ensure that sidewalks are clear of snow and ice. If any portion of the sidewalk becomes slippery for any reason, the owner or occupant must immediately and as often as necessary apply ashes, sand, salt, or some other suitable material to the sidewalk, so as to completely cover the slippery surface.

Multiple rounds of clearing may be necessary for heavy snowfalls, or to address icy conditions on subsequent days. It may take up to 48 hours to complete sidewalk plowing.

Clearing Catch Basins

Where safe to do so, residents are asked to clear catch basins (the square grates on the road) in front of or near their homes of ice, snow, and debris to help prevent surface flooding and allow water to drain off the road.

You can submit a service request for sidewalk salting, or plowing online at: https://www.toronto.ca/311/, or call 311.

Moving snow onto streets

No property owner, occupant, or another person shall move or permit to be moved snow or ice from private property onto a highway, sidewalk, or laneway

Salting

Transportation Services spreads salt on sidewalks to de-ice the sidewalks, maintaining safe walking conditions for pedestrians.
NOTE: Windrows created by sidewalk plowing operations are not part of the windrow removal program.
