On Tuesday, July 4, the City of Toronto will start a five-month construction project on Broadview Avenue between Gerrard Street East and Danforth Avenue to replace TTC streetcar tracks.
This $6.5 million project is coordinated with the TTC and bundles multiple construction needs into one project to save time and money. To help complete this work as quickly as possible, construction will be permitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The City is replacing the TTC tracks to reduce the current track noise and bring them into a state of good repair. The City is also resurfacing the road and repairing damaged sidewalks and curbs on Broadview Avenue and Montcrest Boulevard.
Additionally, work is taking place in the area to extend the life of sewers, avoiding the need for extensive excavation. The sewer work will be done in phases and completed by early 2024.
From early July to late fall, there will be one northbound lane open and no southbound traffic on Broadview Avenue between Gerrard Steet East to Danforth Avenue.
Throughout the five-month project, sidewalks will remain open for pedestrian access, except for short periods of localized sidewalk repair. Local businesses will be open as usual.
The City is taking measures to help manage traffic flow in the area, using real-time video monitoring, electronic message boards, traffic agents and paid duty officers. People travelling in the area should use alternate routes and allow extra time to get to and from their destinations. The construction will be done in phases. As with any construction project, the timelines could be affected by weather, supply chain issues or other unforeseen circumstances.
