The City of Toronto is shining a spotlight on freedom, resilience and inclusion as it kicks off Emancipation Month by raising the Black Liberation Flag at Toronto City Hall.

The flag will remain flying throughout August at City Hall on Bay Street and at the North York and Scarborough Civic Centres. It will also fly at other civic centres on Emancipation Day weekend.
The flag raising ceremony will feature official remarks from City officials, a musical performance by Canada’s Got Talent semi-finalist Simone Soman and a spoken word performance by ByAffrica.
Several commemorative events will take place throughout the month under the theme “Celebrating Black Disability Justice: Engaging Black Disabled Communities.” Each recognizes and uplifts the voices, experiences, contributions and leadership of Black Torontonians with disabilities while promoting inclusion, accessibility and equity.
