Today, FIFA announced that the City of Toronto will host six matches in the FIFA World Cup 26™, kicking off on June 12, 2026, with the first-ever FIFA World Cup ™ men’s match on Canadian soil and featuring the opening match of Canada’s Men’s National Team. Toronto is also proud to host a round of 32 match on July 2, 2026, adding to the pride and exhilaration of hosting this extraordinary global event.
Embodying the “The World in a City” theme, Toronto will showcase its passion for soccer and multicultural identity. The City’s diverse neighbourhoods, united by a profound love for soccer, eagerly anticipate welcoming fans from around the world.
The City will kick off its hosting duties with the first match at the Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) on June 12, 2026. Joining 15 other cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States, Toronto is prepared to be an outstanding host in the soccer spectacle. The tournament is set to have a total of 104 matches.
Scheduled to commence on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, the tournament promises to captivate fans until the final match on Sunday, July 19, 2026, when the iconic 18-carat gold trophy will be lifted in New York City/New Jersey.
In June 2022, Toronto kicked its way into the spotlight, scoring the designation of a Host City for the FIFA World Cup 26™. The upcoming tournament is set to bring significant benefits to the City including a hat-trick of economic, cultural and community advantages. FIFA World Cup 26™ games in Toronto are expected to create more than 3,585 jobs, welcome more than 300,000 visitors from out of town and generate approximately $393 million in gross domestic product (GDP) for Toronto. Additionally, Ontario is expected to benefit from more than $456 million in GDP. Canada is expected to see more than $1.2 billion in GDP from the Vancouver and Toronto games combined.
Hosting the FIFA World Cup 26™ in Toronto is expected to leave lasting legacies – through growth in local participation in soccer through role models, better playing facilities and improved coaching and organizing capacities. Beyond the matches taking place at the Stadium, the City is committed to organizing numerous fan events, enriching the global soccer celebration and solidifying Toronto’s imprint on the FIFA World Cup 2026™ experience.
In 2026, Canada is set to make history as it hosts the FIFA World Cup™ for the first time after nearly four decades of hosting other FIFA events. This milestone follows the success of hosting the highly praised FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in 2015.
The construction of Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) was initially prompted by Toronto’s hosting of the 2007 FIFA U20 Men’s World Cup. The Canadian Men’s National Team has twice competed in the FIFA World Cup in 1986 and 2022 and is gearing up for the upcoming competition in 2026.
FIFA World Cup 26™ will be the biggest sporting event ever, with three Host Countries, 16 Host Cities, 48 teams and 104 matches uniting an entire continent to showcase a momentous new tournament format.
