Today, Mayor Olivia Chow presented the Key to the City to labour leader Jack Oliveira, recognizing his dedication to workers’ rights and his leadership in strengthening communities across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. The presentation took place during the annual Labourers’ International Union (LiUNA) Local 183 Retiree Day BBQ at Downsview Park.

Originally from Portugal, Oliveira emigrated to Toronto in 1972 where he later began his career in the construction industry. He joined the LiUNA Local 183 in 1984, rising to the position of Business Manager.

During his tenure, Oliveira helped grow Local 183 into the largest local construction union in North America, representing more than 70,000 members. Under his leadership, the union has been at the forefront of advancing workers’ rights and advocating for strong employment protections, safe working conditions and valuable services for its members.

Oliveira has long been an advocate for working families and community development, championing numerous initiatives supporting workers, newcomers and underserved communities.
