The deadline to file or withdraw a nomination to run as a candidate for the Office of Mayor, Councillor or School Board Trustee in the 2026 municipal election is tomorrow, Friday, August 21 at 2 p.m.

To complete the nomination process to run as a candidate for the Office of Mayor, Councillor or School Board Trustee, a person must:

  • File a nomination paper with their original signature
  • Provide proof of name, signature and qualifying address within the city of Toronto or the school board jurisdiction
  • Pay a filing fee of $200 for candidates running for mayor and $100 for candidates running for councillor or school board trustee
  • Provide at least 25 endorsements of nomination from eligible Toronto voters with original signatures, if running for the Office of Mayor or Councillor.

Nominations must be filed in person at the Toronto Elections City Hall office located at 100 Queen St. W., first floor, Permit Alley. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays). Tomorrow, August 21, the office will accept nominations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Individuals filing or withdrawing a nomination must bring all completed forms, required documents and identification with them. Both the nomination paper and the endorsements of nomination must be completed on the prescribed forms and have original signatures.

These forms, along with additional information, are available on the Toronto Elections webpage: www.toronto.ca/elections.

Until a nomination paper is filed, a person cannot raise or spend any money on their campaign.

The final list of certified candidates will be available after the close of nominations on the Toronto Elections List of Candidates & Third Party Advertisers webpage: www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections/candidate-list.

Third party advertiser registration  

Any person, corporation or trade union intending to spend money to promote, support or oppose a candidate in the 2026 municipal election must register as a third party advertiser.

To register as a third party advertiser, a Notice of Registration form must be filed in person at the Toronto Elections City Hall office located at 100 Queen St. W., first floor, Permit Alley. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays). The final day to file a Notice of Registration is Friday, October 23.

Members of the media interested in filming the last day of candidate nominations may check in with City of Toronto media relations staff at the Toronto Elections City Hall office in Permit Alley at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, August 21.

Visitors to City Hall, including candidates and members of the media, who do not possess a City-issued access card, must go through the security screening procedure prior to entering Permit Alley.
