Proposed Queensway BIA
The City of Toronto received a request from The Queensway Steering Committee to conduct a public consultation meeting on February 1, 2012, to discuss the potential for a BIA for The Queensway in the area of Royal York Road and Kipling Avenue.
The Eglinton Way BIA Coordinator opportunity

Commercial Façade Improvement Program
The City offers grants to eligible commercial property owners for the improvements to commercial building façades. The program application will be available online March 1, 2012. To learn more about this program attend an information session to be held on Thursday, April 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, 2nd floor, Committee Room 3.
Mural Program application deadline approaching
Business associations and community groups can receive funding for exterior wall mural projects. The deadline to apply is March 29, 2012.
Family Day on The Kingsway - February 18
On Saturday, February 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Kingsway BIA is hosting our first annual Family Day on The Kingsway event! Willingdon Boulevard and Wendover Road at Bloor Street West will be closed for food, family fun, music and more!

Shade guidelines and policy
The provision of shade in City-owned and operated outdoor venues, in particular where children are in attendance, is an important measure for the primary prevention of skin cancer and its associated health and economic burden.

HST rebates for BIAs
On July 1, 2010 the 8% PST and 5% GST was harmonized into a single sales tax, the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). BIAs will be eligible for a refund.
Renew business licenses and get A-Frame sign permits online
The City has introduced new online services for businesses requiring a licence or a permit. The two new online services that will help most businesses located in BIAs are: Online A-Frame Applications and Online License Renewal Payment.
Backflow Prevention Program - Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI)
A Water Supply Bylaw, for Industrial, Commercial, Institutional (ICI) and Multi-residential Properties (five or more units) is in effect to protect potential contaminates from flowing back into the City's water supply system. ICI properties require backflow prevention device(s) to be installed immediately after the water meter in order to isolate the premise. A multi-phased, heritage-inspired murals project is literally transforming the streetscape in the Village of Islington BIA.
Functional public art on Parkdale Village BIA streets
Taking the form of a tree, butterfly, gargoyle and other inventive designs, bike racks have been installed in various locations in the Parkdale Village Business Improvement Area (PVBIA).

Benefits of a BIA
BIAs help create safe, unique, and thriving business areas that attract shoppers, diners, tourists, and new businesses in an age of competition with shopping malls and big-box retailers. The City of Toronto offers grants for festivals and special events, banners and murals, façade improvements and commercial market research. Learn more about BIAs in your community.
How to create a BIA
The decision to start a BIA can only be made by the local business people and property owners. Starting a BIA is a three step process which includes establishing a steering committee, determining community interest, and holding a public meeting. The City of Toronto works closely with prospective BIAs through all three stages to offer support and guidance.

The City of Toronto's BIA Office works with the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA), an umbrella organization, to address and resolve ongoing issues and concerns of Toronto's BIAs. More information about TABIA.
Profiles of various capital projects
One of the important financial incentive programs available to Toronto BIAs is capital cost-share funding for streetscape improvements. Projects range from the installation of unique gateway markers, street furniture, lighting or tree pit covers to dramatic streetscape makeovers that transform the public realm and beautify the entire neighborhood.
