June Callwood Park Development

Future Home of June Callwood Park

Design Competition & Development

June Callwood Park is to be designed and developed as a new park, and significant addition to the public realm of the Central Waterfront. The park is located at the foot of the historic Fort York area of Toronto in Ward 19. It will serve as the central public space for local neighbourhood activities.

The new park is named in honour of June Callwood, who passed away in April 2007 at the age of 82. June Callwood was an internationally acclaimed female journalist, author, television host, community activist, recipient of nearly 20 honourary degrees, and Companion of the Order of Canada. Before her passing, June attended a naming ceremony for the park in July 2005.

June’s career was driven by her compassion and a strong concern for social justice, especially on issues affecting children and women. She helped found over 50 social organizations including:

Design Competition Process

As part of a two-stage open design competition, consultant teams with a commitment to design excellence and a proven ability to design, develop and construct high quality urban parks, were invited to submit a preliminary design proposal for June Callwood Park.

From these submissions, four firms were selected by a selection committee to proceed to Stage II and submit conceptual design proposals. The four designs produced in Stage II will be exhibited to the public for comment. A jury of seven members will recommend a winning proposal to the City of Toronto for detailed design and construction.
